When developing your basement there are considerations you should keep in mind. For rooms that you wish to be allocated as bedrooms, you will require egress in case of an emergency.

You will need a smoke detector located in a central area close to the bedrooms or in a bedroom hall or corridor. In any case a smoke detector should be installed in the basement.

A family or games room is perfect for the basement area, and there is not a teenager alive that does not migrate to the basement to get that much needed 12 hours of sleep between midnight and noon.

Your design can include trim work, cabinetry or even a cozy fireplace with mantel.

Moisture is a villain, So ensure proper procedures are followed before  beginning to develop the space.

Basement insulation and water proofing solutions

Basement walls are subject to moisture from both inside and outside the house. Insulating the exterior of the foundation keeps it at room temperature protecting the structure, reducing the risk of interior condensation and increasing comfort.

The disadvantages are the disturbance of landscaping. The advantage to that is, likely larger trees have been planted to close to the foundation and some of the issues are related to this very thing.

Interior insulation should be used in conjunction with exterior foundation insulation. This can be done when finishing the basement by using batt insulation in the stud cavities, polystyrene technology or other recommended forms of basement finishing. Only using interior insulation, the foundation wall then becomes the exterior temperature and will be subject to large forces applied in the freeze thaw cycle resulting in cracks and moisture penetration, from minor to major leaks.

Environmentally friendly

The systems that we use are considered environmentally friendly. The reduction of heating fuel, and not having to fill landfill with wasted material from unnecessary interior wall removal helps to eliminate green house gas emissions.

Basement repair and Foundation Envelope System

Winters and springs in Edmonton bring stress and moisture to concrete foundations. Never apply interior insulation to a concrete basement foundation with moisture problems. Fix the basement foundation moisture entry problems before insulating. (figure 1, figure 2) A leaking concrete basement foundation is repaired at the same time using our exterior insulation system. The method of exterior insulation cost is offset by the fact that the foundation leaks be solved and future leaks are prevented. The weeping tile and sump pumps (figure 1, figure 2)can be addressed at the same time to reduce the threat of run off and ground water entering the basement.

This system of foundation basement repair gives you the ability to increase the insulation in your cold damp basement to a healthy, warm R-24. This is 100% greater then the average R-12 wall when only insulated on the inside.

Is your Interior is complete?

Adding additional insulation and waterproofing the foundation can be done with out touching the interior of the basement. With the exception of adding a sump pump.

The sump pump can be added to any area of the basement providing a connection to the weeping tile can be made and a discharge outlet can be installed to the outside of the house. A electrical circuit is required to operate the discharge pump.

Typical Home

There is no typical home type, size or age. All poorly waterproofed and insulated homes built in Alberta will benefit from this system.
